It’s August at Peacock House!

Facelift complete!

The front of Peacock House is beautiful! The  siding installation is finished, the new shutters (that Dennis made )are up and new hydrangeas are planted under the window boxes!  It certainly was worth the noise , the dirt and the inconvenience to everyone.  I can say that now because it is over!  Hooray!!!

Ferry to Eastport
The View coming home

For my Birthday I took the “Lubec to Eastport Ferry”.What a glorious day! I recommend the boat trip to anyone. The water was like glass, the sun was shining ,the fresh air invigorating , and to top it off, the eagles were soaring above.  Can life get any better than this?  Summer in Lubec has been perfect – so come enjoy!

Peacock House Gets a Face Lift

Does this look familiar? It doesn’t to me!

Well friends, Peacock House is undergoing a major renovation – new siding.  It has been 7 days and I am feeling a bit better about the whole project – now that I can see some progress! Work of this nature seems to take forever…and I am anxious to get it all over with.  Our guests, have been terrific and understand that this type of work can only be done during the summer when we are open for business.  In a week or two, after this is all over, I will be happy and relieved.  New hydrangeas will be planted in the front flower bed and I will be able to look at beautiful new siding!  Dennis, of course is busy doing other things around the house – installing new venting in the attic, making new shutters and preparing to paint the back addition.  So, there are busy workers all over the place, just trying to make Peacock House the best it can be!

Thank you to all our flexible and understanding guests – they are the best!

Maple Syrup …YUM!!

A real sugar shack

I have lived in Maine almost 10 years and I am sad to say I have never visited a Maple Sugar Farm!  Well, that all ended this weekend when a friend invited me along for a ride. If you can imagine a steaming , warm room filled with the aroma of cooking sugar… that is a sugar shack and you just might be in heaven!  Imagine too, being given homemade vanilla ice cream drizzled with dark amber pure maple syrup.  YUM……

What a treat to live in a place like this!

This is the real thing - pure maple syrup!

Now…I’m off to have some ice cream and syrup
You don’t think one time was enough, do you?!

A Sure Sign of Spring!

Spring is coming!

In most places, the sure signs of Spring are daffodils, crocuses and The Easter Bunny- not in Downeast Maine! You are looking at our version of a “sure sign”  – the ubiquitous Frost Heave.  Right now , they are everywhere.  Some are signed, most are not.  You can see them from afar, or not.  Your car gives a shudder when you come upon one – big or little.  While we quietly, or not so quietly, curse them …they do let us know that Spring is on it’s way .

Here are some other happenings that let us know the “season” is about to start -

Steve Erwin performed at The Crow Town Gallery on Saturday, March 19.  He was wonderful and his CD , ” Was It Like This” is fantastic.  Check it out…at steveerwin.com.

On April 30th, David Mallett returns to Lubec  to benefit The Lubec 2011 Bicentennial.  The show begins at 7pm and is being held at The Lubec Congregational Church. Come to hear the man called ” the living embodiment of the state of Maine.”  Doors open at 6:30 pm . Tickets are $15.00 online, $20.00 at the door.  Visit www.cobscookbaymusic.com for updates and tickets. Come and stay at Peacock House - make an overnight of this special event and help “kick start” our Spring visitor season! You can call us at #207-733-2403 or make a resercation online at www.peacockhouse.com

The  8th Annual Downeast Spring Birding Festival is being held May 27- 30, 2011.  The Cobscook Bay Area has a diversity of bird species and habitiats, and festivals remind us of our stewardship role in protecting and supporting this beautiful area we call home.  Peacock House is a perfect base from which to enjoy the festival, so come and stay with us this Memorial Day weekend.  For more information , visit www.downeastbirdfest.org or call #207-733-2233.  To stay with us just call or e-mail us, we’d be thrilled to have you stay at Peacock House!

 HAPPY SPRING!

Return from the South

Hi all! We have just returned to Peacock House after a two week holiday in Georgia.  What a treat!  The weather was delightful – mid 80′s – and it was a chance to relax and soak up some much needed sun.  Our stay included a visit to Cumberland Island – a spectacular barrier island off the coast of St. Marys  Georgia.  The town of St. Marys is a delight and the house we rented for the week was perfect ! We also took in St. Simon and Jekyll Islands.  Our days were spent walking, reading, napping and of course eating!  Now, we are back home at Peacock House and beginning to realize that we open for Season #10 in a few weeks – lots to do!  I must confess to really appreciating a small break from the weather.  Our time in St. Marys gave us the energy to deal with the remainder of winter.  Even though it has been relatively warm and sunny since our return, we KNOW that it is just a tease… we have a least one more snow ahead of us!  Any way…here are a few photos of our trip…..

My Piano Teacher

As I was playing the piano yesterday and thoroughly enjoying myself, I wondered about my childhood piano teacher, Grace Mease.  How old was she now? Was she still alive?  Where was she?. So, thanks to the magic of the internet (that most marvelous of machines) I found an address that I thought must be her.  Since my childhood was spent in Pennsylvania ,I contacted my Father and asked him to find a telephone number .  He found Miss Mease in the phone book, but was adamant that she could not possibly still be alive!  After all, if we estimated that she was 40 years old at the time of my lessons, she would have to be in her mid to late 80′s at this point!  Well, not to be daunted, I called the number ….imagine my delight when an answering machine said “Welcome to the Mease household and Piano Studio.”  She is still teaching!  I left a brief message explaining who I was and how happy I was to find her.  I then quickly sat down and wrote her a letter of gratitude for teaching me and being such a kind , loving instructor.  I have heard many horror stories from others who have had mean-spirited and uninspirational piano teachers.  Only now do I realize how fortunate I was that my Mother selected Miss Mease. So, in honor of all those wonderful piano teachers in the world and anyone who helped us along life’s journey – I say a big THANK YOU!

Is there someone you would like to thank ?
